That is the NSS (National Screen Service) number. All movie posters had one till the mid to late 80's. It means that Horror High was the 83rd film released in 1974.

No problem. They used the number style like yours had till mid 77. Then starting using the numbers like you see on most of mine. Here is a link to some info:
