in my search for games I am continuously seeing auctions listed for 360 achievements. what the hell? I thought Microsoft fixed/patched the 360 in order to stop this?

Sorry if this is a dumb question but why would anyone care about how many achievements they have? Does it get you anything?
I thought the achievements just showed how far in the game you had gotten or how good you played that was all.
