ABC CANCELS "UGLY BETTY"

LOS ANGELES (thefutoncritic.com) -- ABC has pulled the plug on "Ugly Betty" after four seasons.

"We've mutually come to the difficult decision to make this Ugly Betty's final season, and are announcing now as we want to allow the show ample time to write a satisfying conclusion," the network and producers said in a joint statement. "We are extremely proud of this groundbreaking series, and felt it was important to give the fans a proper farewell."

The news doesn't come as much of a surprise as "Betty" has averaged a modest 4.72 million viewers and a 1.6 rating among adults 18-49 since taking over the Wednesday, 10:00/9:00c hour earlier this month. While an improvement from its Friday, 9:00/8:00c audience (4.53 million, 1.2 rating among adults 18-49), the series nevertheless fell short of previous time period holder "Eastwick's" average (5.00 million, 1.7 rating among adults 18-49).

ABC still has eight episodes left to air of the series, which is expected to wrap in April. The Alphabet originally committed to 22 episodes for its fourth season, which has now been dialed back to 20.

Fox cancels 'Past Life'

Past life Reincarnation crime drama "Past Life" isn't coming back -- at least, not to Thursdays.

Fox is yanking the struggling and widely panned series after three episodes, including last night's fourth-place performance, where it drew a 1.1 preliminary rating among adults 18-49.

Instead, Fox will air three weeks of original episodes of "Kitchen Nightmares" in the slot (with "Nightmares" also continuing to air on Friday nights). "Bones" and "Fringe" repeats will take over March 18, with originals returning April 1.

Fox says the remaining episodes of "Past Life" will be burned off sometime later this season.

FX renews 'Archer'
Network orders 13 more episodes

FX took another step toward cementing its growing comedy block by renewing toon laffer "Archer" for a second season.

Net said Monday that it has ordered 13 episodes for season two, which will launch in 2011. Ten episodes were ordered for season one.

Through its first seven episodes, "Archer," about a dysfunctional spy agency, was averaging 1.2 million viewers.

"We're very happy with the audience response and critical acclaim for 'Archer,' " said Nick Grad, exec VP of original programming.

Renewal for "Archer" comes on the heels of the sophomore season pickup for "The League," which bowed last fall.

Also on the comedy front, FX recently announced that the premiere for "Louie," from exec producer Louis C.K., has been moved from April 1 to June 1, and will be paired with hourlong Denis Leary starrer "Rescue Me."

"Archer" is exec produced by Adam Reed and Matthew Thompson, and produced by FX Prods.

"SMALLVILLE" TO RETURN FOR A TENTH SEASON ON THE CW

March 4, 2010 (Burbank, California) - The CW Network has announced that its hit series "Smallville" will return in the fall of 2010 for a momentous tenth season.

"Smallville," a modern retelling of the Superman legend, stars Tom Welling as Clark Kent. The series moved to Friday nights this season, where it currently ranks as network television's #1 show in its time period among men 18-34 and men 18-49. Additionally, "Smallville" has dramatically improved The CW's ratings performance in its Friday 8:00-9:00p.m.time period by 67% among adults 18-34 (1.5/6), 200% in men 18-34 (1.8/7), 75% in adults 18-49 (1.4/5), 183% in men 18-49 (1.7/6) and 74% in total viewers (3.12million).

"Smallville" joins the five previously announced series - "The Vampire Diaries," "Gossip Girl," "90210," "Supernatural" and "America's Next Top Model" - which will all return for another season on The CW.

NBC GIVES PICKUPS TO THURSDAY-NIGHT COMEDIES '30 ROCK,' 'THE OFFICE' AND 'COMMUNITY' FOR 2010-11

Renewals Follow Previously Announced Green-light for "Parks and Recreation" on Thursdays

UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. - March 5, 2010 - NBC has renewed three more of its Thursday-night comedies - "30 Rock" (9:30-10 p.m. ET), "The Office" (9-9:30 p.m. ET) and the freshman series "Community" (8-8:30 p.m. ET) for the 2010-11 season. The returning programs join the previously announced "Parks and Recreation" (Thursdays, 8:30-9 p.m. ET) that also will return for next season.

The announcement was made by Angela Bromstad, President, Primetime Entertainment, NBC and Universal Media Studios.

"We are happy to give these early pickups to these critically acclaimed, incredibly funny comedies," said Bromstad. "As a result, we look forward to continuing our rewarding partnership with the respective creative teams and talented show-runners for '30 Rock,' 'The Office' and 'Community' as they all consistently deliver quality shows."

First-year comedy "Community" is averaging a 2.7 rating, 7 share in adults 18-49 and 5.9 million viewers overall so far this season, with "Community" originals winning the time period among adults 18-34 and men 18-34. Since moving to the Thursday 8-8:30 p.m. (ET) half-hour on October 8, "Community" has improved the time period by 24 percent versus NBC's adult 18-49 average earlier in the season.

Currently in its sixth season, "The Office" is network television's #1 primetime scripted series among adults 18-34 and is NBC's #1 scripted series in the key demographic of adults 18-49. "The Office" regularly finishes #2 in its highly competitive time period in adults 18-49 ahead of CBS's "CSI." The most recent "Office" telecast on March 4 outscored ABC's "Grey's Anatomy," marking the first time "The Office" has topped "Grey's" head-to-head in adults 18-49. For the season through 23 weeks, "The Office" is averaging a 4.9 rating, 12 share in adults 18-49 and 9.4 million viewers overall, representing gains versus last season of 4 percent in 18-49 and 3 percent in total viewers.

Currently in its fourth season, "30 Rock" is averaging a 3.4 rating, 8 share in adults 18-49 and 6.9 million viewers overall, with "30 Rock" originals winning the time period among men 18-34 and men 18-49 despite airing opposite the concluding half-hours of ABC's "Grey's Anatomy" and CBS's "CSI." "30 Rock" is the most upscale comedy on broadcast primetime television when ranked by its concentration of homes with $100,000-plus incomes in its adult 18-49 audience.

The Emmy Award-winning comedy series "30 Rock" is told through the comedic voice of Emmy and two-time Golden Globe winner Tina Fey ("Saturday Night Live") as variety show producer Liz Lemon and features Emmy and three-time Golden Globe winner Alec Baldwin ("The Departed") as top network executive Jack Donaghy. Also starring are Tracy Morgan, Jane Krakowski, Scott Adsit, Jack McBrayer, Judah Friedlander and Keith Powell.

More fringe science and parallel universe conundrums are coming.

The science fiction drama "Fringe" has been renewed for a third season, a FOX publicist confirms to Zap2it.

The show, which returns to finish up its second season on April 1, has averaged around 7.6 million viewers this season.

"Fringe" centers on an FBI team that uses "fringe" science to investigate odd and disturbing occurrences worldwide.

When last we left the team, Agent Olivia Dunham (Anna Torv) had returned from an alternate universe and regained a special ability from childhood that allows her to uncover a surprising secret about Peter Bishop (Joshua Jackson)

CBS has ordered a second cycle of the hit reality series, UNDERCOVER BOSS, for the 2010/11 broadcast season.

UNDERCOVER BOSS, which follows high-level chief executives as they slip anonymously into the rank and file of their companies, is the number one new series of the 2009-2010 season, averaging 18.74 million viewers, 8.0/17 in adults 25-54 and 7.1/17 in adults 18-49.

The series premiered following the Super Bowl to 38.7 million viewers, the largest audience for a new series following the Super Bowl. It also ranks as the biggest new series premiere since 1987 and the most-watched premiere episode of any reality series.

"We are thrilled with the overwhelming response to the series and how audiences seem to connect to it on several levels," said Jennifer Bresnan, Senior Vice President, CBS Alternative Programming. "The wish fulfillment of seeing the top boss perform jobs of the rank and file is universal, and the employees' stories discovered at each company are often relatable and inspirational."

Each week, UNDERCOVER BOSS follows a different executive as they leave the comfort of their corner office for an undercover mission to examine the inner workings of their companies. While working alongside their employees, they see the effects their decisions have on others, where the problems lie within their organizations and get an up-close look at both the good and the bad while discovering the unsung heroes who make their companies run.
