Portal used to cost money. Until May 24th, it's free. End of story.

Well, technically speaking, there are some strings attached. Fortunately, they're entirely decorative. We just like the way they look, swaying in the gentle breeze created by a million people simultanously fainting from shock at the news that Portal is free. Now you have no reason not to try Portal.

"I have a reason," some of you are probably typing into an angry email. "You see, sir, I own a Mac."

Well guess what: For the first time ever, Portal is also available for the Mac.

"Capital news! But the excellent puzzle adventure Portal won over 40 Game of the Year awards; Surely it must cost at least five or six hundred dollars."

You'd think that, especially since it actually won over 70 Game of the Year Awards. But, like we keep saying, Portal is free. Free on the Mac. Free on the PC. But only until May 24th.

By the way, if you're thinking of grabbing this be advised that the download is a 5GB file so expect it to possibly take a while. I'm currently grabbing a copy wirelessly on my desktop and it's actually moving at a decent speed so far but it could be a fluke at this point since all you see for status is a little line status bar.

I'm downloading it now and it said it was a little over 2.4gb.
57% downloaded after 15 minutes

It's weird, on my desktop which is Win7 it had a 5GB file but on my laptop which is Vista it had a 3.8GB file. No idea why the difference.

I downloaded through Steam and I have other Source games installed so maybe Portal uses some of those files. Do you have any Steam Source games installed on your machines? Source games as in games that use the Half Life 2 engine?

Nope, both machines needed to download everything since it was my first ever Steam download.

I have lots of steam games including Left for Dead 1 and 2, Half Life 2, Counter Strike Source, Fall Out 3, Saints Row 2, Stalker 1 and 2

Just played Portal and got to level 11. Pretty fun.

Decided to delete it from my laptop and noticed something screwy. I had to download both the Steam app and the Portal game. The game download was 5GB as I said before but on removal it was only 39MB. The Steam app itself I have no idea what the download size was but the app claimed it was 1.5MB. So now I deleted those 2 items and I'm still missing the 5GB of space. No clue where that space is now.
